Peel the onion and cut off the top (stem) end.  Place the onion cut-side down on a cutting board

Starting about 1/2 inch from the root, make a downward cut all the way through the onion, then make another cut about 1/2 inch from the first one

Repeat this process until you have made cuts all around the onion. Make sure not to cut all the way through the root end, as this will hold the onion together

In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper to make the batter

In another bowl, whisk eggs and milk to create an egg wash

Dip the onion into the egg wash, making sure to coat it thoroughly

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to around 350°F (175°C)
